Lummis Day Educators' Program Registration Begins
Registration is now open for “The River Runs Through It: Charles Lummis and the Culture of the Arroyo Seco,” a workshop designed for educators, to be conducted Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16. The curriculum will include immersive sessions in Los Angeles history, lectures from notable artists and historians and visits to Northeast Los Angeles' cultural landmarks.
Workshop participants will meet from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM on both Saturdays.
The Arroyo Seco culture is characterized by the larger than life persona of Charles Fletcher Lummis, the first city editor of the Los Angeles Times, one of the city's first librarians, and founder of the Southwest Museum, so attendees will participate in:
Field Study and Nature Walk in the restored Lower Arroyo emphasizing the Geography of the Arroyo Seco Watershed |
Instruction in the Sense of Place that Environmental Education restores to all the disciplines |
Docent Tours of the Casa de Adobe, Lummis Home and Gardens, the Heritage Square Museum, and Judson Studios |
Discussion with speakers on the Heritage of the Inhabitants of the Arroyo, the role of transportation in the development of the Lower Arroyo Seco, and in the Music Transcriptions of Charles Lummis at the Southwest Museum's Braun Library |
Teachers will create meaningful, standards-based, curriculum-relevant projects for use in their own classrooms |
We encourage participants to share their projects on June 6, 2010, as part of the Lummis Day Festival in Sycamore Grove Park. |
