|
Scheduled for two Saturdays, February 11 and 25, 2012, the LAUSD-approved point-credit class, A River Runs Through It: Charles Lummis and the Culture of the Arroyo Seco registration is open. This hands on interactive workshop includes the participation of Wilderness Way Magazine, the Arroyo Seco Foundation, Judson Studios, the Audubon Center at Debs Park, the Tongva/Gabrielino and Fernandino Tribes, the Historical Society of Southern California, Heritage Square Museum, Highland Park Heritage Trust, and Friends of the Los Angeles River.
Saturday, February 11, beginning at 8:15 AM with a walk in the Lower Arroyo Park, participants will become familiar with the urban wilderness and local river systems, and develop understandings of the relationship of environmental education and all disciplines. After the walk, the participants gather at the Audubon Center in Debs Park with director Jeff Chapman and Tongva/Gabrielino tribal council member, Julia Bogany and Ted Garcia, Chumash/Tatvia stone carver and story teller. Mid afternoon of the 11 th we gather at the River Center with Friends of the Los Angeles River learning how the organization has taken on the challenges of educating Angelenos about the continued place of the River in their lives by protecting and restoring the natural and historic heritage of the Los Angeles River and its riparian habitat.
On Saturday morning, February 25, participants gather at the Judson Studios, in continuous production of stained glass for over 110 years, for a tour of the facility. Mid morning we gather in Sycamore Park with the Highland Park Heritage Trust's Sycamore Grove Walking Tour for which participants are welcome to make arrangements for family and friends to join them for the tour of the “place where Los Angeles began”. Skilled docents talk about the various waves of immigration from the original settlers, the Tongva, through the era of the early Spanish ranchos and the annexation of the first suburb of Los Angeles that shaped present day Arroyo life. The tour visits Victorian homes, the Hiner House and Sousa Nook, Professors Row, and the original Occidental College Hall of Letters.
In the afternoon we will tour the Lummis Home and Gardens, El Alisal, learning about the life and work of Charles Fletcher Lummis, the first City Editor of the Los Angeles Times and the founder of the Southwest Museum. A tour of Heritage Square Museum, the 40 year-old venue that offers visitors a look into the every day lives of Southern Californians at the close of the 19 th Century will complete the day's activities.
From these experiences participating teachers will be able to create meaningful, curriculum-relevant project-based lessons for use with students.
The program is limited to 20 participants. The registration fee of $85 covers materials, workshop speakers and tours, and lunch on February 11, and is due by January 27, 2012. Some participants may wish to receive two CEU credits rather than the LAUSD point credit. CEU credits are available through CSU San Bernardino for an additional $90 per credit but arrangements must be made by January 14, 2011. The CSU fee is paid by check on the first day of class.

“A River Runs Through It:
Charles Lummis and the Culture of the Arroyo Seco”
For LAUSD point credit course #NA-14-159 *
. All participants complete the evaluation form that is provided and sign in at all venues as directed by the instructor. **
Participants develop a project relating to their subject and/or assignment that integrates information and materials from this workshop with an emphasis on how Charles Lummis and the Culture of the Arroyo, as presented in the workshop series, can have an influence on the students you teach. A good format can be found at http://cadreonline.org/. The instructor will provide a copy of this format to all participants completing the course for point credit. LAUSD teachers should use My Data information to instruct their practice.
- Consider the students you teach and their understanding of their place in their community . How can you use the information you have gathered and the understanding of Charles Lummis' view of the Southwest as being unique and meaningful in ways that other parts of the United States view their communities?
- Consider the subject(s) that you teach and how having “a sense of place” will enhance the expected outcomes of the lessons you design . Real world application of information and problem solving techniques adapt themselves well to the experiences you can bring to your classes.
- As professionals we understand the importance of planning . This project should be of sufficient involvement to indicate extensive research and writing that are equivalent to 30 hours of preparation time . For example, this preparation can be in the form of a Webquest from which the participant will involve the students in a meaningful project-based lesson.
If mailed by USPS, the assignment should be attached to this assignment form and sent to Carmela Gomes, c/o Lummis Day Community Foundation, Inc, P.O. Box 50543, Los Angeles, CA 90050. *Assignment must be received by March 25, 2012 in order for the NA-Form to be submitted.
To return your assignment by email, fill in the MSWord document(s) found above, and attach it them with the assignment and send it to gomescarmela16@gmail.com - For more info, contact Carmela Gomes at 818-429-8755
